Update summer 2010: I have graduated from ASU and will start at the MIT Media Lab this fall. Hooray! Updates to follow.
As of Fall 2009, I am pursuing a Masters in Computer Science at Arizona State University with a concentration in Arts, Media, and Engineering. I'm generally interested in complex systems of computation and communication, in making things with my hands, and in working with kids and technology.
I am currently designing interfaces for distance play for kids. I'm building a dollhouse and inhabitants handmade with both natural, tactile materials and computationally enhanced objects for remote communication.
I have been part of a team working to build fun, smart, and educational robots (the ALERT and ALERT ESP projects). We presented our first iteration, a robot that could be programmed in real time with physical tiles, at Maker Faire 2008. We also used it to teach robotics programming at a local high school and are preparing curriculum materials to make the project available to other teachers.
I'm involved in another project called GALLAG ("Game as Life, Life as Game) with Dr. Winslow Burleson. The goal is to build a system integrated into the user's home and mobile devices to help support their life goals. We are using X10 and other sensor and actuator devices to make the system aware of the user's actions and able to help encourage them to engage in behaviors they set as goals.
In Fall 2008 I led an undergraduate team in preparation for the Supercomputing 2008 Cluster Challenge. Parallel and cluster computing was my introduction to computer science and has helped me learn about the complexities of communication systems.
I was the Treasurer/Fundraiser for the ASU Linux User Group until I became a graduate student.
If you happen to do a web search for me, I am not involved in sports.
